Jenson Button grabs last second pole in Spain
A disastrous qualifying session for Kimi Raikkonen
Brawn GP’s Jenson Button has secured for the third time in the season the pole position for Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix. The Briton, thanks to a perfect lap in the last seconds of qualifying (1:20.527), snatched the pole from Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel (1:20.660) who had to settle with the second spot in Sunday’s grid.
Rubens Barrichello ended up third (1:20.762) ahead of Ferrari’s Felipe Massa (1:20.934), Red Bull’s Mark Webber (1:21.049) and Toyota duo with Timo Glock (1:21.247) beating team mate Jarno Trulli (1:21.254).
Local hero Fernando Alonso (1:21.392) managed only to P8, while Nico Rosberg to P9 (1:22.558) and Robert Kubica to P10 (1:22.685).
There were again surprises during qualifying. Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen, got knocked out as soon as Q1 ended. The Maranello based team – as per admission of a Ferrari spokesman – was again too optimistic by leaving the Finn in the pits thinking he had done enough to qualify to Q2. Raikkonen will start the Spanish Grand Prix from the 16th spot.
Only 14th and 18th place respectively for Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen. Both drivers, visibly disappointed, lamented lack of speed.
