Gilles Villenuve, hairpinThe FIA World Motor Sport Council met in Paris today and issued the revised schedule for the 2009 Formula One calendar. The WMSC confirmed the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – to be staged on November 15th – but dropped unexpectedly the Canadian Grand Prix. The 2009 F1 Championship will start on March 29th in Australia and will end on November 15th in the United Arab Emirates.

The Canadian Grand Prix organisers didn’t know that the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit in Montreal would have been excluded from next year’s calendar. “The executives of the Grand Prix of Canada have learned via the media of the omission of the Grand Prix of Canada from the F1 Championship 2009 calendar,” the organisers said in a statement. “The organization will issue no comment until having spoken to Formula One Management (FOM) and the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA)”, they added.

Why on earth was the Canadian Grand Prix cancelled? This is a very large event for the city of Montreal and being the only event in Canada it keeps F1 veiwers here> Does F1 wish that canadian viewers watch the three Indy-Cart races for their open wheel racing instead? Does this mean that Cart has become a better racing venue for the Canadian. Gilles Villeneuve must be rolling over in his grave. Shame on you F1.
