Double world champion Fernando Alonso along with Rubens Barrichello, championship leader Jenson Button, Adrian Sutil and Sebastien Buemi were given five place grid penalties after the Japanese qualifying session.

The race stewards analysed the telemetry data and deemed the drivers had failed to reduce their speed on seeing the yellow flag at the exit of the Spoon corner during Q2 after Buemi’s crash.

Alonso will start the Japanese Grand Prix from P17, Button from P11, Barrichello from P9, Sutil from P8 and Buemi from P14.
