Local hero Rubens Barrichello kept his title hopes alive by grabbing the pole position for the 2009 Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos, in a qualifying session characterised by extreme weather conditions and delays due to the very slippery track.

Red Bull’s Mark Webber (1:19.668) ended up second ahead of Force India’s Adrian Sutil (1:19.912), Toyota’s Jarno Trulli (1:20.097), Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen (1:20.168), Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Buemi (1:20.250), Williams’ Nico Rosberg (1:20.326) and BMW’s Robert Kubica (1:20.631).

Championship leader Jenson Button will start from the 14th spot after being knocked out in Q2 along with Robert Kubica, Jaime Alguersuari, Romain Grosjean and Tonio Liuzzi. The Force India driver brought a red flag during the first few minutes of Q2 when he aquaplaned heavily on the main straight, slammed on the pitwall and slid across the track ending against the tyre wall.

Championship contender Sebastian Vettel got knocked out in Q1 and ended up only 16th ahead of Heikki Kovalainen, Lewis Hamilton, Nick Heidfeld and Giancarlo Fisichella.
