Timo GlockGerman rookie Timo Glock is closer than Ralf Schumacher on granting the second seat at Toyota in 2008, according to reports. The German newspaper Bild claims that Glock, GP2 series leader and BMW Sauber test driver, is negotiating with Cologne based Toyota for a $2m (US) deal to race for the team next year. Timo Glock, 25 years old, made his F1 debut in 2004, replacing Giorgio Pantano at Jordan late in the season.

Bild said Toyota has now decided not to take up the 2008-2009 ‘option’ on Schumacher’s current contract, which officially expires next weekend. It could mean, however, that the Japanese giant simply wants to bring down the 32-year-old’s huge $19 million annual retainer. “We’re in discussion with Ralf,” Team President John Howett revealed, “and we’re studying the driver market and Ralf is still definitely on our list.”

The publication also said Toyota, with spending power of up to $40m for the seat alongside Jarno Trulli next year, would be among those teams willing to receive Fernando Alonso if the Spaniard leaves McLaren at the end of 2007.
