Lewis Hamilton Nurburgring Crash 2007World championship leader Lewis Hamilton has escaped serious injury after crashing heavily during Qualifier Session for the German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring; his presence for tomorrow’s race is still in doubt.

Hamilton was entering the fast esses (Schumacher S) after the hairpin during the third phase of qualifying when his McLaren suffered a failure on the right front corner, causing his car to sped across the gravel trap and to make violent contact with the tire barrier at high speed. Lewis attempted to get out himself from the cockpit but was clearly in shock and stopped to await medical assistance.

Ron Dennis: “It was a failure of the right-hand wheel gun, so effectively the wheel wasn’t properly put on. But that’s not the mechanic’s fault. We are not quite sure what failed, but in fact it was quite fortunate because the same gun was used on Fernando’s car and he hadn’t started to lean on it yet. We could tell from that it was a gun failure. At least we know we don’t have a problem with the car. He has no pain, no broken bones and did not lose consciousness. We won’t decide for a couple of hours”.

If Hamilton starts the race, he will do it from 10th position.
