Jenson Button wins the 2011 Hungarian Grand Prix 

Sebastian Vettel second, Fernando Alonso third.

Jenson Button2009 world champion Jenson Button won today the 26th edition of the Hungarian Grand Prix celebrating in the best possible way his 200th F1 race.

Sebastian Vettel finished second ahead of Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton in the other McLaren and Mark Webber in the other Red Bull.

Sixth place for Felipe Massa, seventh for Paul Di Resta in the Force India, eighth for Sebastien Buemi in the Toro Rosso, ninth for Nico Rosberg in the Mercedes GP and tenth for Jaime Alguersuari in the other STR.

2011 Hungarian Grand Prix, lap by lap highlights:

The eleventh race of the 2011 season is about to start at Hungary’s Hungaroring circuit.

Championship leader Sebastian Vettel starts from pole position today for Red Bull Racing ahead of McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton. Jenson Button starts from the third spot of the grid in the other McLaren ahead of Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso in the Ferrari, Mark Webber in the other Red Bull, Nico Rosberg in the first of the Mercedes GP’s, Adrian Sutil in the Force India, Michael Schumacher in the other Mercedes GP and Sergio Perez in the Sauber.

With half an hour to the start of the race, light rain is falling in the Hungarian track. Meteo France predicts a race start under light rain. The track temperature is currently at 18C while rain is getting heavier minutes ahead of the formation lap.

No indications yet from the race stewards of a wet start under Safety Car.

Most – if not all – of the drivers opted for intermediate tyres.

Race start: Lights go off! Race start in Hungary and…into Turn 1, Vettel, Hamilton, Button. Rosberg up to fourth, Schumacher fifth. Alonso passes Schumacher for fifth.

Lap 2/70: Hamilton pressuring Vettel for P1.

Lap 3/70: Cars are sliding all around the wet Hungarian circuit. DRS has been enabled. Vettel is really struggling for grip with both McLarens right on his tail.

Lap 4/70: Alonso run wide at Turn 2 allowing Rosberg to regain P4.

Lap 5/70: Vettel runs wide at Turn 2 and Hamilton takes the lead of the 26th Hungarian Grand Prix. Vettel P2, Button P3, Rosberg P4, Alonso P5, Massa P6, Webber P7, Schumacher P8 then Di Resta and Kobayashi.

Lap 6/70: Buemi has gone all up to 12th. Schumacher is being told over the radio that no rain is expected for the next 20 minutes.

Lap 7/70: Petrov is 11th ahead of Buemi, Barrichello, Alguersuari, Maldonado, Kovalainen, Sutil, Heidfeld, Glock, Perez, Trulli, D’Ambrosio, Ricciardo and Liuzzi.

Lap 8/70: Massa spins at Turn 2, nudging gently backwards into the barrier and recovers in ninth.

Lap 9/70: Alonso overtakes Rosberg for P4. Meanwhile, Hamilton increases the lead to Vettel to +5.4 seconds.

Lap 11/70: Hamilton P1, Vettel P2, Button P3, Alonso P4, Rosberg P5. Webber pits from sixth and switches to slicks. Massa, Petrov, Barrichello all pit.

Lap 12/70: Button pits from third. Di Resta pits. Heidfeld, Maldonado and Glock pit.

Lap 13/70: Race leader Hamilton pits. Vettel and Alonso pit. Rosberg pits. Kobayashi and Buemi pit.

Lap 14/70: Schumacher pits while Hamilton retakes the lead. Button overtakes Vettel for P2 while Webber passes Alonso for fifth.

Lap 15/70: Webber runs wide at Turn 1. Drive through penalty for Maldonado for speeding in the pitlane.

Lap 16/70: Hamilton P1, Button P2, Vettel P3, Webber P4, Alonso P5.

Lap 17/70: Alonso is closing on Webber.

Lap 19/70: Hamilton increases the lead to 8.6 seconds.

Lap 20/70: More rain expected in the next 10 minutes. Trulli retires following an oil leak.

Lap 21/70: Massa is now pressuring Schumacher for eighth.

Lap 25/70: Heidfeld pits. Yellow flag at the pitlane exit: Heidfeld’s Renault caught fire.

Lap 26/70: Webber and Alonso pit. Massa pits. Petrov and Buemi pit.

Lap 27/70: Hamilton pits from the lead. Schumacher pits from eighth.

Lap 34/70: Massa overtakes Kobayashi for sixth.

Lap 35/70: Kobayashi makes his second pit stop.

Lap 40/70: Webber pits from fourth and rejoins in fifth, behind Alonso.

Lap 42/70: Vettel pits and resumes in fourth, behind Alonso.

Lap 43/70: Button makes his third pit stop. The Briton resumes just ahead of Alonso.

Lap 45/70: Vettel overtakes Alonso for third. The radar is showing an increased threat of rain in the remaining 25 laps. Perez pits.

Lap 47/70: Light rain is falling in the pitlane. Hamilton has been off the track at the chicane. Button takes the lead as Hamilton recovers.

Lap 48/70: Alonso pits.

Lap 50/70: Button P1, Hamilton P2, Vettel P3, Webber P4, Alonso P5. Massa passes Rosberg for sixth.

Lap 51/70: Alonso is being told over the radio that rain will last for 10 minutes. Replays show Button running wide at Turn 2, allowing Hamilton to retake the lead.

Lap 52/70: Button charges and overtakes Hamilton on the main straight but Hamilton re-passes at Turn 2. Webber pits. Sutil, Maldonado and Liuzzi pit.

Lap 53/70: Hamilton pits for intermediates.

Lap 54/70: Webber pits again for slicks. Alonso overtakes Hamilton for P3.

Lap 55/70: Hamilton pits for slicks. That’s five pit stops for the Briton. Drive through penalty for Hamilton for a dangerous recovery at the time of the chicane spin.

Lap 57/70: Hamilton serves his penalty and resumes in sixth behind Webber.

Lap 58/70: Webber passes Massa for P4.

Lap 59/70: Hamilton passes Massa for fifth. Massa pits.

Lap 60/70: Kovalainen retires following a water leak.

Lap 62/70: Button P1, Vettel P2, Alonso P3, Webber P4, Hamilton P5, Massa P6.

Lap 64/70: Hamilton overtakes Webber for P4. Kobayashi pits from 11th.

Lap 66/70: Alonso is pushing hard to catch up Vettel.

Last lap: Jenson Button wins the 26th edition of the Hungarian Grand Prix. Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull finishes second ahead of Fernando Alonso in the Ferrari. Fourth place for Lewis Hamilton in the other McLaren and fifth for Mark Webber ahead of Felipe Massa, Paul Di Resta, Sebastien Buemi, Nico Rosberg and Jaime Alguersuari.
