Heikki KovalainenWhen back in December McLaren-Mercedes presented Heikki Kovalainen as their new driver for 2008 season, most of the people rushed to label the Finn as “driver number 2″, behind Lewis Hamilton. The Finn, however, especially in Malaysia where he was quicker than his teammate all weekend, has demonstrated that he has quite a potential.

“He is definitely the surprise of the year. In Malaysia, he was surpassed only by Ferrari and his qualifying sanction, and in his second race as Hamilton’s teammate, that is to his credit,” commented Ferrari’s test driver Mark Gene.

Three time World Champion Niki Lauda, has also praised the Finn: “He hasn’t too much experience of the team, yet was faster than Lewis the whole weekend. Without doubt he was the right choice for McLaren because so far he is doing a perfect job.”

Kovalainen finished third in the 2008 Malaysian Grand Prix, just behind Kimi Raikkonen’s F2008 and Robert Kubica’s F1.08.
