Fernando AlonsoDouble World Champion Fernando Alonso has stated that he would have probably won Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix, if the team would have gotten right the pit strategy. “The strategy was a mistake that it was too big for what we should demand from ourselves,” the Spaniard told the Spanish newspaper As. “We would probably have won if we had stayed on track instead of pitting when the safety car came out.”

“I asked the team twice on the radio if they were sure that that strategy was the best, and they told me it was and I pitted. When I saw Heidfeld was in front of our car I realised I was right, that it would have been better not to pit. Heidfeld came out ahead of Kubica and he was quite far behind us. He had a long stop. Stopping on lap 25 we would have been ahead of Kubica and we could have won the race,” he continued.

“We are not going to have a lot of chances to fight for the podium with BMW, and less of being able to match their speed, like this weekend. We had the chance and we didn’t take it, so we’ll have to wait until we get the next one” he added.
