Fernando Alonso and Nelsinho PiquetFernando Alonso will race for the ING Renault F1 Team at least for two more years. The Spaniard, following a difficult season but with some surprising performances particularly in the last races – he won the Singapore and the Japanese Grand Prix – has extended his contract for 2009 and 2010 season with Flavio Briatore’s team. Alonso’s team mate, Nelsinho Piquet, has also been confirmed with Renault for a further season.

“We have one of the most exciting driver pairings with the perfect blend of youth and experience,” stated Renault Managing Director Flavio Briatore. “Fernando’s commitment for the next two seasons confirms the faith he has in the team and we are delighted to continue working with him. He has been a big asset throughout this difficult season and his leadership and talent, matched with the team’s hard work and determination, have paid off with our recent performances, which have placed the ING Renault F1 Team back among the top competitors of Formula 1.”

Fernando Alonso has collected 61 points this season, gaining the fifth place in the Formula One Drivers’ Championship, while the ING Renault F1 team, thanks also to 19 points from Nelsinho Piquet, ended fourth in the Constructors’ Championship. “After a difficult start to the season,” said the Spaniard, “we have overcome our difficulties and constantly improved our performances. My back-to-back wins in Singapore and Japan, and my recent second place podium finish in Brazil, have proved how competitive we can be.”
