Damon HillDamon Hill, Britain’s last F1 World Champion, has backed Lewis Hamilton for his several mistakes this season. “When you start in Formula One, you have a clean sheet of paper,” Hill told The Times. “In his first year, Lewis drew this beautiful picture. Now you don’t turn over a new piece of paper and start again in year two, you have to improve on the picture you painted in the first year. But it is always going to be very, very difficult to embellish that when the next step is to win virtually every race and the championship.”

“I have every faith in Lewis as a driver and as a potential champion and I think, after such a brilliant first year, he is bound to come back to the norm – but Lewis will respond to that challenge,” he added.

“It’s much better to have that than it is to have a driver who never puts a foot wrong but never does anything brilliant.”
