Hamilton's final lap crash hands podium to Raikkonen

Rubens BarrichelloAfter the 2009 European Grand Prix at Valencia, Brawn GP’s Rubens Barrichello got back scoring his second victory in the season at the 2009 Italian Grand Prix at the Autodromo di Monza.

Championship leader Jenson Button finished second completing the fourth one-two finish in the season for Ross Brawn’s team, ahead of Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen, third thanks to a last lap crash by McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, and an impressive Adrian Sutil in fourth.

Fifth place for Renault’s Fernando Alonso, followed by McLaren’s Heikki Kovalainen, BMW’s Nick Heidfeld, Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari’s Giancarlo Fisichella in ninth.

2009 Italian Grand Prix, lap by lap highlights:

Formation lap: Lewis Hamilton starts from pole for McLaren Mercedes for the second time in the season. Next to the Briton there’s Force India’s Adrian Sutil. Behind the two, Kimi Raikkonen and Rubens Barrichello. Fifth spot on the grid for championship leader Jenson Button ahead of Force India’s Tonio Liuzzi, Renault’s Fernando Alonso, and the two Red Bulls with Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber. Toro Rosso’s Jaime Alguersuari will take the start from the pit lane after his team made some changes to his car following qualifying.

Race start: Hamilton P1, Raikkonen P2, Sutil P3. Webber out at the Roggia chicane. Liuzzi passes Kovalainen at Parabolica.

Lap 52/53: Alonso passes Vettel for P8. Kubica overtakes Vettel. Fisichella P11.

Lap 51/53: Hamilton leads followed by Raikkonen, Sutil, Barrichello, Button and Liuzzi. Heidfeld passes Fisichella for P11.

Lap 50/53: Alonso passes Kovalainen for P7. Hamilton P1, 2.1 secs ahead of Raikkonen.

Lap 49/53: Pit stop for Rosberg. A long stop for the German: problems with the right front wheel.

Lap 48/53: Kubica has a broken left front endplate. Replays show the Pole made contact with Webber at the second chicane on the opening lap.

Lap 47/53: Fastest lap for Hamilton. He leads with 3.5 secs on Raikkonen.

Lap 46/53: Black and orange flag for Kubica. The stewards want him to pit for a front wing swap.

Lap 45/53: Sutil steady in P3. The Force India driver is within a second of Raikkonen.

Lap 44/53: Kubica pits for a new front wing.

Lap 43/53: ALlonso pressuring Liuzzi for P6. Team radio for Grosjean: his gearbox is overheating, says the engineer.

Lap 42/53: Sutil P3, closing on Raikkonen P2.

Lap 41/53: Hamilton laps Rosberg.

Lap 40/53: Fastest lap for Hamilton. Raikkonen and Sutil getting ready to lap Rosberg.

Lap 39/53: Hamilton P1, followed by Raikkonen, Sutil, Barrichello, Button, Liuzzi, Alonso and Kovalainen.

Lap 19/53: Hamilton makes his second pit stop. 7.7s, he rejoins in P4 behind the two Brawn GPs.

Lap 18/53: Pit stop for Trulli and Nakajima. Fastest lap for Sutil.

Lap 16/53: Pit stop for Raikkonen and Sutil. They rejoin in P4 and P5.

Lap 15/53: Barrichello now leading the race. Trulli passes Glock for P12.

Lap 11/53: Sutil tailing Raikkonen for P4. Replays show Vettel running over the gravel at the second Lesmo.

Lap 9/53: Barrichello P1, Button P2, Hamilton P3.

Lap 6/53: Contact between Trulli and Nakajima at Turn one.

Lap 3/53: Sutil still pressuring Raikkonen for P4.

Last lap: Hamilton out at the first Lesmo. Safety Car deployed. Replays show Hamilton going off between the two Lesmos crashing into the tyre barriers. Brawn GP’s Rubens Barrichello wins the 2009 Italian Grand Prix ahead of team mate Jenson Button. Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen finishes third after Hamilton’s last lap accident. Fourth place for Force India’s Adrian Sutil, ahead of Renault’s Fernando Alonso, McLaren’s Heikki Kovalainen, BMW’s Nick Heidfeld and Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel. P9 for Fisichella at his first race with Ferrari.
