Barrichello wins the 2009 European Grand Prix 

Second consecutive podium finish for Raikkonen

Rubens BarrichelloBrawn GP’s Rubens Barrichello took his 10th career win at the 2009 European Grand Prix at Valencia ahead of McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, who could have won easily the race if his mechanics would have been ready during the Briton’s second pit stop.

Third place and second consecutive podium finish for Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen ahead of McLaren’s Heikki Kovalainen, Williams’ Nico Rosberg, Renault’s Fernando Alonso, championship leader Jenson Button and BMW’s Robert Kubica.

2009 European Grand Prix, lap by lap highlights:

Formation lap: Lewis Hamilton starts from pole for McLare Mercedes for the first time in the season after an excellent qualifing. Next to the Briton there’s team-mate Heikki Kovalainen. Behind the two, Brawn GP’s Rubens Barrichello followed by Sebastian Vettel, championship leader Jenson Button, Kimi Raikkonen, Nico Rosberg, Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber and Robert Kubica.

Race start: Good start for the two McLarens followed by Barrichello and Raikkonen. Collision between Glock and Buemi.

Lap 56/57: pit stop for Glock and Buemi for a front wing swap. Grosjean also pits after a puncture.

Lap 55/57: Hamilton p1 then Kovalainen, Barrichello, Raikkkonen, Vettel, Rosberg, Alonso, Button.

Lap 52/57: Webber overtakes button for p8.

Lap 51/57: Hamilton p1, 4 seconds ahead of Kovalainen.

Lap 48/57: Hamilton still leading the race followed by Kovalainen, Barrichello, Raikkonen, Vettel, Rosberg and Alonso.

Lap 44/57: Hamilton 6.3 secs ahead of Kovalainen.

Lap 41/57: pit stop for Hamilton: 9.4 secs, back in p6. Vettel and Kubica pit.

Lap 40/57: pit stop for Kovalainen, 8.8 secs, back in p7. Alonso pits. Vettel pits again.

Lap 39/57: Fastest Lap for Barrichello.

Lap 38/57: Raikkonen pits, 8.4 secs, back in p8. Button pits.

Lap 37/57: Barrichello pits, 9.0 secs, he rejoins in P2. Rosberg and Webber pit. Hamilton p1, Barrichello p2, Kovalainen p3.

Lap 35/57: Sutil, Heidfeld and Alguersuari pit.

Lap 34/57: Vettel retires after an engine failure.

Lap 30/57: Hamilton p1 ahead of Barrichello, Kovalainen, Raikkonen, Rosberg, Alonso, and Webber.

Lap 29/57: pit stop for Badoer and Grosjean.

Lap 26/57: drive through penalty for Badoer for crossing the white line at the pitlane exit.

Lap 24/57: Trulli makes his first pit stop.

Lap 22/57: Badoer spins but he rejoins.

Lap 20/57: second pit stop for Hamilton. His McLaren mechanics weren’t ready and the Briton lost precious time.

Lap 19/57: Kovalainen pits. Barrichello p1, now clocking fast laps.

Lap 18/57: Nakajima has a puncture on his rear left tyre.

Lap 17/57: second pit stop for Barrichello and Raikkonen. Nakajima pits. Barrichello rejoins in P1.

Lap 16/57: Barrichello p1, Rosberg p2, Hamilton p3, Alonso p4, Raikkonen p5.

Lap 15/57: Alonso and Button pit. Grosjean pits.
