Robert Kubica, a fan of street circuits 

Anyone asking Robert Kubica what his favourite circuit is receives a definite, immediate answer: Macau. The BMW Sauber F1 Team driver is a self-confessed fan of difficult city circuits. For this reason, he is looking forward to Valencia’s Street Circuit debut.

The “Guia Circuit” in Macau, where he came second in both the 2004 and 2005 Formula 3 Grands Prix, is not the only course that Robert holds dearly: In the past, Monaco was the only Formula One venue to also offer tight urban canyons. This season sees the addition of two similar highlights to the Formula One programme, in the form of Valencia and Singapore.

Robert loves the challenge and potential pitfalls of a race around public roads. “I am a big fan of street circuits in general”, says Robert. “They are more demanding as they are often bumpy and the street surface changes. If you make a mistake you can easily run into barriers.”

Safety is always a much-disputed subject at city races. Robert is not concerned about this aspect of the race in Valencia on 24th August. “Valencia will not be a complete street circuit”, explains the Pole. “There will be lots of run-off areas for safety reasons. The FIA puts a lot of effort into safety – which is a good thing.”
