Robert Kubica, Bahrain 2008Following Robert Kubica’s excellent start this season, Pat Symonds, ING Renault’s Executive Director of Engineering, talked once again about the wasted opportunity by the French outfit back in 2005, when there was the chance to recruit the young Polish. At the time, Kubica was part of Renault’s Driver Development Programme and had the chance to test with the Renaut F1 team as a reward for winning the World Series by Renault.

“After that drive, I was very, very keen that we follow on with him,” said Symonds. “He really was most impressive in testing and I really wanted to do something with him. He wasn’t too keen at the time, and of course later we found out that he was on the verge of signing a deal with BMW. I feel that he was one that got away from us.”
