Fernando AlonsoWith Renault found guilty by FIA’s WMSC for stealing McLaren secret data but with no penalties on its back, Fernando Alonso’s deal for 2008 season with the French team appears to be only a matter of time. The Spaniard delayed his final decision about next year until it was clear that he wouldn’t be afflicted by any penalties; or whether in fact Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn would pull the plug on the F1 program altogether in the face of a heavy fine.

According to Spanish media, including the sports newspaper Diario AS, the 26 year old double World Champion will certainly now sign a 2 year contract. Alonso’s contract will reportedly include an exit clause in the event that the new collaboration ‘does not work’ for unspecified reasons. ‘The announcement is imminent,’ the newspaper predicted, speculating that next Monday could be the day.
