The newly formed Brawn GP F1 team has dominated the 2009 Australian GP qualifying by locking out Sunday’s front row. Jenson Button took his first pole position (1:26.202) since 2006, beating his teammate Rubens Barrichello (1:26.505) by 0.303 seconds in the last seconds of Q3. Third time for Sebastian Vettel (1:26.830), ahead of BMW’s Robert Kubica (1:26.914), Williams’ Nico Rosberg (1:26.973) and Toyota’s Timo Glock (1:26.975).

The qualifying session proved rather disappointing for Scuderia Ferrari – despite being the only team with KERS to finish in the top ten – as Felipe Massa managed to come up only to P7 while Kimi Raikkonen to P8.

For McLaren-Mercedes things went even worst. Reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton was able to make it to Q2 but a drivetrain problem on his MP4-24 at the end of Q1 left him in P15 without actually taking part in Q2. His teammate, Heikki Kovalainen, did marginally better by finishing on P14.
