Japanese GP Fuji Speedway FogThe first night race in Formula One history that will take place in September 28, 2008, will start at 8pm local time. This was announced earlier this morning by Singapore Grand Prix organizers. In order to ensure that the lighting for the race will be as effective as possible, the organizers have chosen an Italian company, Valerio Maioli S.p.A. specialized in the engineering of lighting and telecommunication systems for over 40 years. It is expected the brightness levels to be four times what is normal at sports stadiums.

“The entire track, including the run-off areas, has to be consistently lit,” said a company spokesman. “However, the run-off areas won’t be as bright as the rest of the track, in order to avoid confusing the drivers. The light beam has to be controlled such that occasionally, if the cars spin and end up facing a wrong direction, the driver’s vision is not impaired.”

The Italian company revealed that it will only light one side of the track, in an attempt to minimize brightness for television cameras. “The lighting projectors will only be placed on one side of the track, fixed at the same side of the track as the television cameras, to reduce brightness when broadcasting the race. As the height of a Formula One car is only 1 meter, the shadows cast would be minimal. Thus, it is not necessary to have lights on both sides of the track.”
