2008 British GP, Qualifying: first career pole for Kovalainen
McLaren’s Heikki Kovalainen has conquered his first Pole Position in F1 by setting the fastest lap time in today’s Qualifying session at Silverstone. The Finn managed to beat by half a second an exceptional Mark Webber on P2 who secured to Red Bull Racing the best ever qualifying position. Kimi Raikkonen qualified third while teammate Felipe Massa, following a technical problem on his F2008, was able to grab only P9 for tomorrow’s grid.
Kovalainen’s teammate, Lewis Hamilton, managed to finish fourth as a mistake in his first Q3 lap ruined his good performance and couldn’t improve in his second attempt.
Fifth spot on Sunday’s grid for BMW’s Nick Heidfeld, followed by Renault duo with Fernando Alonso (P6) ahead of teammate Nelsinho Piquet (P7). Eighth place for Toro Rosso’s Sebastian Vettel, ninth for Felipe Massa and tenth for Robert Kubica. The Pole, however, following a suspected puncture on one of the tyres while in his flying lap, had to pit and couldn’t set a time in Q3.
